As members of the Sunbed association we follow safe tanning guidelines and offer informed advice to suit your skin type.

When tanning for the first time make sure you check your skin type and choose the appropriate tanning time and lotion to suit you.  At Tan City it will be a maximum of 4 to 6 minutes. Leave at least 48 hours between your 1st and 2nd and 3rd sessions. We like to see 2 clear days. Thereafter at least 24 hours. Again we like to a clear day.

After your first session you should check you body for any unusual marks or urns or changes in your skin. If you are happy that all is okay then go for your second session. Remember it is better to build up your tan gradually. Too much too soon will burn you and your tan will not last as long. Sunburnt skin does not recover fully. A tanning lotion will help you tan and re-hydrate your skin helping to prevent ageing. Once you have reached the colour you want to be you can maintain it by regular sessions once or twice a week.

Darker faster and for Longer

Why should we use an accelerator or moisturiser?

Firstly, a dry skin will not tan as effectively as moist skin. Dry skin is translucent and will reflect UV rays. So a skin that has had moisturiser applied to it will tan better.

Secondly, a tanning accelerator excites the melanin production in your skin bringing it to the surface. Melanin is the natural pigment which is turned brown under UV light. There are different lotions and generally speaking the more expensive they are the more effective they are; containing more effective accelerants and moisturisers. The accelerators are of natural extraction, concentrated into the lotion to help you tan.

You need to remember to apply the lotion immediately before going on to the sunbed. If you do not go onto a bed straight away the melanin extra melanin produced will subside making the accelerator worthless.

Can I use accelerators out doors? Yes - but they do not contain any sun protection factor as they are designed for use with sun beds so if people are using lotions for outdoor tanning they must apply over the top of the accelerator. However, we do not recommend the use of tanning accelerators outdoors.

Can I use SPF on the sunbeds? Unless you have specific parts of your body that you need to protect there is little point. We do provide SPF30 lip balm sticks. These can be used o cover tattoos (which can fade with regular exposure to UV), moles and lips.
